People who derive joy from causing distress or harm to animals are more likely to engage in antisocial, violent and criminal behaviour, according to Psychologists for Animal Welfare (PAW).

Media Release: Kangaroo shooting: A lethal sport, 14 March 2006
Kangaroo shooting parties are encouraged by a culture that considers the kangaroo to be a pest or vermin. Research has shown this perception to be a myth with kangaroos struggling for survival through extended drought. Such a culture has engendered an ill-founded hatred toward the species. PAW encourages Australians to be re-educated about our native animals and about animal abuse.

A recent newspaper clipping - Christmas could go to the dogs.
The first paragraph reads: Wyong councillors will be asked tonight to vote on a program that could save the lives of hundreds of dogs on death row. They will be asked to give their support to a trial free pet program.

Abuse and torture of kittens alarming
The recent incidents of kitten torture are alarming for several reasons according to the APS. Associate Professor Eleonora Gullone, Chairperson of the APS Interest Group Psychologists for the Promotion of Animal Welfare, says psychological research has consistently shown a link between cruelty to animals and violent behaviour toward humans as well as criminal behaviour generally.
