KEYNOTE 1:

Coaching Psychology: Coming of age?
Dr Alison Whybrow, Coaching Psychologist Practitioner and Chair of the SGCP, British Psychological SocietyAlison Whybrow

Alison will address two key questions: What does it mean to practice as a coaching psychologist and what does coaching psychology offer? At the turn of this century, the phrase ‘coaching psychologist' had rarely been conceived and infrequently used. Here, in 2008, we find a fully fledged profession of Coaching Psychology and many thousands of practitioners spread across the globe. Indeed, Coaching Psychology is striving for recognition as a separate domain of practice within the broader profession of Psychology, differentiating itself from Clinical, Organisational, Health, Counselling and other applied psychologies.

What makes a coaching psychologist? How does this differ, yet build on developments in other areas of applied psychology? In this presentation, I will explore a number of dimensions of the profession of coaching psychology and what that means for our practice and our clients.

Alison has spent her professional life studying, researching and working with people in organizations. Alison is keen to raise the profile of Psychology and Coaching Psychology within the Coaching industry and to raise understanding and awareness of the Psychological underpinnings of coaching. Additionally, as routes to accreditation for coaching psychologists are being developed, it is timely to explore what differentiates coaching psychologists from other applied psychological practitioners.
