2010 National CAPIG Conference

Unity and Diversity: Christians in Professional Practice in Psychology
30 April – 1 May 2010 Novotel St Kilda
Welcome

Throughout the ages, God has worked in His people to display His amazing multi-faceted wisdom, as expressed in Ephesians 3:10.  When the apostle speaks of this, we are encouraged to think that "the term, which has the literal meaning of a great variety of colours, emphasizes that the wisdom of God shows itself in a great variety of forms.  As a beautiful picture is composed of many different colours and shades, so the wisdom of God has many aspects, forms, implications, and threads" (Rev. D. H. Kuiper, reformedwitness.org).

If we are to look at what Christians are doing at the present moment in the profession of psychology, we can find the same amazing variety of activity and application on the cutting edge as has always been the case throughout history.

Our next conference offers a display not only of the work of committed professional expertise but also a reflection of the work of God in the world of psychology today.

Within the Australian Psychological Society (the APS), members may organise themselves into particular interest groups, such as our Christianity and Psychology Interest Group (CAPIG).

CAPIG has a national membership of approximately 400. The membership is comprised predominately of people who are both Christians and psychologists, although the interest group itself is open to any psychologist (or APS member) wishing to join, and meetings are also open to all, whether psychologist or not. At the local levels around the country, small groups of CAPIG members might meet regularly for discussions and/or to listen to speakers on a wide range of topics of interest around both Psychology and Christianity. CAPIG also organises national conferences every two years.

  • Dr Art Wouters MAPS
The significance of Trinitarian Theology in the practice of psychology

Art heads up Tabor College Victoria's School of Counseling and Psychology and teaches a variety of modules in these areas. He has a particular interest in psychotherapy and counselling.

Having been born in Holland, he came from South Africa to Australia in 2006. He has found it a rewarding task to build bridges between his profession and the Christian community. In the past he has worked mainly in private practice, graduate and post-graduate education, and consulted to business and churches in the area of counselling, leadership and self-deception. Before coming to Australia, Art spent a dozen years working with a community development organisation in South Africa concerned with victims of political oppression.

Art feels like he has "come home" to Tabor with its commitment to serving the Christian community and society. He is grateful for the opportunity to work with a vibrant and creative team of Christian academics and professionals who are dedicated to the growth of students into their calling and to richly equip them to fulfill their vocation. He has a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and a PhD degree in Psychology and enjoys the various facets of academic life there which he says are both fun and challenging.
